Zachary Smith is an entrepreneur and strategic business leader with 20 years of experience in cloud hosting and internet infrastructure. He currently serves as the Global Head, Edge Infrastructure at Equinix, where he leads the strategy, product and go to market for Equinix’s bare metal compute and network NFV platforms. He is also the president of the Open19 Foundation Board. Previously, Zachary was co-founder and COO of Voxel, a Linux-based internet infrastructure platform and early cloud computing startup. As one of the leaders in usage-based infrastructure services, he helped the company raise private equity capital and through its acquisition by Internap (NASDAQ: INAP) in 2011. He led the Cloud Hosting division at Internap through 2012.
In 2014, Zachary co-founded Packet to empower technology-enabled Enterprises with automated bare metal infrastructure no matter where it was, what it was or who owned it. As CEO, Zachary led the startup’s product development and go to market, as well as orchestrated multiple rounds of venture capital and debt financing. Packet became the leader in bare metal compute automation and was acquired by Equinix (NASDAQ: EQIX), the world’s largest data center and digital infrastructure operator in 2020.
